Define the question first
Tell us whether you need to investigate a recurring blockage, locate a section or understand drains before repair or building work. Our drain repairs guide explains how inspection feeds into a repair decision.
For a property purchase or renovation, describe the decision you are trying to make and who needs the findings. Ask about the information and format required before arranging the work.
What affects the inspection scope?
- Access: where the camera can enter and whether that point is reachable.
- Preparation: whether clearing is needed to examine the line.
- Extent: which drains or sections need investigation.
- Locating: whether findings need to be related to a position on the property.
- Findings: how the inspected areas, limitations and recommended next steps will be explained.
Provide any drainage plan and previous reports. They help describe the job, even where the actual route needs checking on site.
Ask what the quoted work includes
We use CCTV and pipeline robotic cameras with GPS location for drainage investigations. Ask which equipment and approach are suitable for the line being examined rather than choosing on the camera name alone.
Clarify whether clearing, locating and discussion of the findings are included. Check GST and any travel or attendance charges, and agree how extra work will be authorised if access differs from the initial description.
Use the findings to make a decision
An inspection should help answer a practical question: which section needs attention, what options should be considered or what further information is needed. Keep the location and findings together so a later repair enquiry can refer to the same section.
When comparing pipe relining and replacement, condition and access matter as well as cost. If a pipe cannot be fully examined, ask what remains uncertain and what the next step involves.
Prepare for the visit
Describe gates, vehicles, landscaping and surfaces near known access points. Share the blockage history and photographs from safe, accessible positions. Leave drain covers and buried services to the team carrying out the investigation.
If the concern involves a new project, our Christchurch drainlaying page helps combine inspection information with the installation and reinstatement brief.
