Start with the site and intended use
Describe the property, the buildings the system will serve and whether this is a new installation or a replacement. Available land, site conditions and the way treated wastewater will be managed are part of the planning discussion.
Collect existing plans and any earlier assessments before requesting an installation scope. If the project also changes other drains, our Christchurch drainlaying service can help you frame the wider work.
Look beyond the tank price
| Budget area | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Assessment and design | What site information and system design are needed? |
| Approvals | Who checks the applicable building and discharge requirements? |
| Equipment | Which tank, pump chamber and other components are specified? |
| Installation | What access, excavation, pipework and connections are included? |
| Completion | Which checks, records and reinstatement are included? |
| Ongoing use | What operating and maintenance requirements apply to the chosen system? |
Agree responsibilities early
On-site wastewater planning can involve both building requirements and regional discharge rules. Confirm the requirements for your property with the relevant council and the people designing the system before installation is scheduled.
Ask who will provide the design information, organise any required applications and coordinate related work. Keep the agreed responsibilities in the project brief so important items are not left between quotes.
Describe access and reinstatement
Include the entrance, space for equipment, nearby structures and any hard surfaces or planted areas around the proposed work. Site access affects how installation can be organised and what needs putting back afterwards.
For replacement work, ask how the existing arrangement will be dealt with and what is included in the changeover. Our drain repair planning guide offers further questions for work on existing lines.
Compare quotes for the same design
Once the design and responsibilities are clear, compare quotes against that same scope. Check GST, exclusions, access assumptions and the process for agreeing extra work if site conditions differ.
Keep system documentation and any maintenance requirements with the installation records. Send us your location, available plans and the proposed work so we can discuss the pipe, tank and pump-chamber installation elements.
Discuss your septic installation
