Outside Drain Smells: What to Check

An outside drain smell is a reason to observe what else is happening around the drain. We can investigate drainage concerns, especially when the smell comes with slow flow, repeated blockage or an overflow.

Describe the smell in context

Note where the smell is strongest and when it occurs. Does it follow use of a bathroom, appear during rain or remain present through dry weather? The blocked drains guide helps you connect the smell with other drainage observations.

A smell alone does not tell you the exact cause or prove that a buried pipe has collapsed. Look for a pattern rather than trying to diagnose the line from one clue.

Make a ground-level record

  • Identify the accessible outside area where you notice the smell.
  • Record any slow fixtures or gurgling inside the property.
  • Note standing water or visible wastewater without approaching it.
  • Write down whether the problem changes after rainfall.
  • Find any earlier clearing or inspection records.

Leave covers in place and do not enter a chamber or enclosed space. Photographs from a safe position can show the area and access without opening the drain.

Check which system is involved

Household wastewater and rainwater have different drainage paths. If you are unsure which outside feature you are looking at, the stormwater and wastewater comparison explains the distinction.

Tell us what drains into the area, if you know. Avoid directing water into a different drain in an attempt to clear or hide the smell.

Respond to an overflow separately

If wastewater is overflowing, keep people and pets away and avoid adding water through affected fixtures. Explain that there is an overflow when you contact us, rather than describing the issue only as a smell.

Our overflowing gully trap guide sets out useful observations to pass on. Cleaning the visible surface alone does not explain why wastewater came out.

Arrange investigation when the pattern persists

We use clearing equipment, CCTV and GPS location to investigate drainage problems. Give us the timeline, affected areas and any work already done so we can discuss an appropriate next step.

If the same problem returns after clearing, keep each event in a short record. This helps distinguish the current symptom from the longer history that may need attention.
