Blocked Drains: Causes and Next Steps

Start with what is affected: one fixture, several drains or an outside overflow. We can clear sewer and stormwater blockages and investigate the line when the cause or a recurring fault needs attention.

When water is overflowing

Avoid adding water through affected fixtures and keep people and pets clear of wastewater. Call with your address and describe whether the water is contained or overflowing.

Our overflowing gully trap guide explains the observations that help with an outside wastewater overflow.

Clearing a current blockage

Tell us which fixtures are affected, when the problem began and whether it has happened before. We use water blasting and vacuum equipment for clearing.

For local help, see blocked drains in Christchurch. Keep clearing and any further investigation clear in the agreed scope.

When the problem returns

Record earlier clearing dates, findings and how long flow stayed normal. A recurring pattern may need investigation as well as clearing.

Use the recurring blockage checklist to bring the history together. If roots have been identified, our roots in drains guide explains the separate question of pipe condition.

Smells and sounds

Note whether an outside smell or gurgling happens during fixture use, rain or both. These clues help describe a concern, but do not confirm a cause on their own.

Use the outside drain smell checklist and gurgling drain guide to record the pattern without opening covers or entering drains.

Rain-related drainage

Explain whether the problem only appears during rainfall and where water pools. Household wastewater and stormwater need to be considered separately.

Our stormwater maintenance checklist covers accessible ground-level observations. The system comparison helps identify the right enquiry.

Costs and the next decision

Ask what attendance, clearing, access and follow-up work are included. The drain unblocking cost guide helps compare written scopes.

If investigation identifies damage, move to our drain repairs guide. We can discuss repair, replacement or structural lining in the context of the findings.

Start here

  1. Arrange help for a current blockage.
  2. Organise a history of recurring problems.
  3. Prepare questions for a clearing quote.

You do not need a diagnosis before calling. The address, affected fixtures, timing and any previous findings give us a useful starting point.
